2021 Haunted Half Marathon
A month and a half after registering for the Provo Haunted Half marathon, we found out we were 'pregonate'!
My favorite quote of the day was from a gal who told me her first half marathon was at week 39 pregnancy: "I felt like I was running with a cannonball between my legs!!" <<< ππΌπ yes
After the great news, the many adventures of pregnancy ensued! Nausea, fatigue, road trips, girls' camp, vacations, work, and the general keeping on top of life took the frontseat whilst exercise existed as an afterthought.
Then September came around, and I had a proper 1 month to prepare for a half marathon. 13.1 miles.
My pregnant tummy and extra weight made each trip to the treadmill an uncomfortable experience. I did go 3 miles once, mostly jogging, then was out of commission with a sore ankle and groin for 3 weeks.
Justin was determined not to let sympathetic pregnancy (couvade) be a thing, so he was a much more consistent gym-goer and worked himself up to about a 6 mile run. (BAAABE)
And this is how we went into the Haunted Half Marathon. Recklessly underprepared, yet determined. Paying $114 for a race that was nonrefundable was enough to fuel my motivation. So we showed up.
October 30th:
4:30 AM - wake up after a short night's rest. Halloween party the night before was a great success. Time to get ready for a 13.1 mile run.
5:30 AM - Off to the Riverwoods! Making sure to arrive early enough to catch a bus up to the starting point in Provo Canyon.
6 - 7:50 AM - wait for race to begin. Try to snatch a spot next to a fire pit to avoid freezing our buns off. Meanwhile, costume contest time!
7:50 AM - use the restroom ONCE AGAIN. Warm up my hips/legs.
8:00 AM - let the good times rooollll.
This is what I posted online about my experience after the fact:
13.1 miles at 31 weeks!
Completing my first ever half marathon at the #ProvoHauntedHalf was incredible!
What I will remember most is the encouragement and support I felt the entire way.
From the sweeper who said, "Don't you want to finish?" when I thought I would need a ride after mile 7 because I was going 'too slow.'
To the volunteers at each rest stop who made me feel like the most impressive person ever even though I was coming in dead last haha.
To the volunteer who caught up with me just to keep me company as I hobbled mile 11.
To my dear, sweet husband who waited for me and walked me through the last 2 miles of the run even though he had already completed his 13.1 miles and had time to cool down enough to feel the pain.
I am so SATISFIED that we both finished. But I will take Riverwood cement's advice a not run again for a while. In fact, I might not move at all again for a few days.
